5 Tips for Throwing a Memorable Birthday Party

5 Tips for Throwing a Memorable Birthday Party

This post is in partnership with World Market.

I’ve thrown my fair share of birthday parties over the years. Between Aiden and Søren’s birthday parties, and my own 30th birthday party recently I feel like I have a good grip on what makes a good party. I’ve had my hand in everything from baby showers, to baby and toddler birthdays, to pre-teen parties, high school reunions, and blogger events. And all of them had a few things in common. I’ve narrowed them all down and partnered with World Market today to share my top 5 tips for throwing a memorable birthday party.

5 Tips for Throwing a Memorable Birthday Party

1. Choose a great location.
For the longest time I’ve only hosted parties in my own home. I felt more comfortable there and didn’t have to transport any party decor or supplies. A few times I’ve been branched out a little (like for this planetarium party) and have to admit that it was a little less stressful to host Søren’s 4th birthday elsewhere. I didn’t have to worry about cleaning the house like it’s going on the market, or whether or not I had enough space. Major factors to consider are the type of party you’re having, the amount of guests, and the weather. I worried it would be too warm for Søren’s party this year, but it turned out just right. I chose a park near our house so it wasn’t too far, but gave us extra space and a playground to entertain the littel ones. The original picnic area I chose for us was already taken, so we had to use another and it worked out fine as well.

2. Details in the Decor
I always try to make my decor look inspired by whatever theme I’ve chosen. For Søren’s camp party I’ve chose wood accents like this charger and cake stand for the cake and cupcakes, and even a camp-inspired lantern. I also really prefer to use real plates and forks because it uses less waste and seems to make the party feel nicer. I always use handy pop-up tables for the food

3. Elevate Your Food & Drink
I’ve always hated the idea of simple birthday parties, and while I have taken the plunge sometimes on an easy pizza order, I love to find fun and interesting foods to serve at my parties. I love the selection of food and drink at World Market, it’s been my go-to for years. I mean seriously, they sell the cutest tiny bottles of everything. My favorite is the San Pellegrino Blood Orange Soda and the other smaller bottled drinks they have. They eliminate the need for cups, and you can choose a cute bottle opener for the table.

4. Make it Fun
A party is great for mingling, but especially if it’s for the littles, it needs to have some fun! For Søren’s camp party I laid out picnic blankets, and offered some great outdoor activities for everyone to partake in. I had art set up at a table, jump ropes, a ring toss game, and sandbox toys in case they wanted to use them at the play ground. For a more adult party, you could come up with some of your own adult-type games or set up something like cornhole.

5. Great Party Favors
When it comes to party favors, I like to find unique items that are also good quality. There’s nothing I hate more than going to a party and receiving a ton of toys or candy that won’t be played with a few days later. I got these adorable twig colored pencils from World Market, and they have a ton of other great small gifts as well. I also included these s’mores because they reminded me of camping, and I didn’t want to overwhelm the goodie bag with sweets.

Do you have any great tips for throwing a memorable party? I’d love to hear!

Indeed, party favors should be unique to the party, and from each other. Colored pencils seem like they could be fun, just a few and they are the colors of the party. Depending on how you buy them though, you may end up with tons of the other pencil colors.
