Road to Hāna

Our first big adventure during our trip to Maui was the Road to Hāna, and beyond. I knew I wanted us to drive around the entire eastern side of Maui, if not for any other reason than to be able to say we did. At 10AM, we started our drive from Wailea a little late. The road began as a two lane semi-curved highway that turned into hair pin turns and switchbacks shortly after the small town of Paia. We stopped at Twin Falls Farm Stand to hike to Twin Falls, but the trail leading up was closed due to higher than normal water levels. We stopped at a couple of other places along the way, including the grove of Rainbow Eucalyptus trees, and a Bamboo Forest. The Bamboo forest was very muddy and didn’t seem easy to do with Søren, so we pressed on.

Once we made it to Hāna, we made the obligatory stop at Waiʻānapanapa State Park to see the blow hole and black sand beach. We also saw the Waiʻānapanapa freshwater cave. It was very beautiful and definitely did not disappoint. We had to pass on the Red Sand Beach because we didn’t have cell signal and weren’t very prepared to find it. After a quick plate at Braddah Hutts, we pressed on. The Seven Sacred pools / Bamboo Forest were pretty crowded, and not worth a stop for us, as we already spent quite a bit of time on other stops and didn’t want to drive the rest of the way in the dark.

Goodness, I can’t believe how beautiful these photos are. I’ve never been to Hawaii, hopefully someday I can go and take some photos half as gorgeous as these!!!

Gorgeous! I can’t wait for my trip to Maui in just over 2 months!!! <3

Once again, your photography is absolute perfection. What lush landscapes! I’ve been to Maui twice (love it!) but have never done the road to Hana!

These pictures are breathtaking! You are going to have the best memories to look back on. You are always doing the coolest things 🙂

oh, this is giving me such wanderlust and memories of my trip there around 6 years this past july! so lucky!

What lovely photos & I’m so jealous you went to Maui! I’ve been twice as my best friend’s parents have a condo there (which they use as a timeshare) but we haven’t been since 2009. Wishing to go back with the Mr! xx

Absolutely stunning! The last time I was in Hawaii I was afraid to do this (bad roads according to some reviews) but I am now regretting that I didn’t. Maybe next time we are there, thanks for sharing!

As long as you can fit in a carry on! 🙂

The drive out to Hana is so gorgeous! I really love the shot you snapped of the bamboo forest, though – is that the one on the hike up to Seven Sacred Pools?

No, we stopped at one near Nailiilihaele Stream. The trails lead to a waterfall but were too muddy/steep for us to hike safely with Søren. We do muddy or steep, but not together. 🙂 We passed on the one near the Pools at Oheo and I’m sort of kicking myself now because it probably would have been worth a stop.
