Tips to Shop Smart This Season

Tips to control your shopping urges and shop smart

With Holiday shopping in full swing now, it can be so tempting to shop a little for yourself while you’re shopping for others. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but today I’m sharing some tips to help you not get carried away in the process.

1. Make a list.
Planning ahead by making a list will always make your shopping easier. I prefer to make not only a list of who I’m shopping for, but the items or type of item as well. I have a simple gift list you can download here.

2. See what you have.
Take a look around your home and wardrobe and try to keep mental notes of everything. If you’re conscious of what you already have in your home and closet, you’ll be more conscious of what you already have and less likely to re-buy or purchase items that you don’t need.

3. Why do you need it?
Asking yourself this simple question may be an easy way to decide on a purchase. It’s easy to say that you “need” something, but asking yourself why will make you have to justify the purchase even more.

4. Make your own list.
If you truly need something for your home or wardrobe, make a list of items you need and carry it with you. If the item you’re thinking of buying isn’t on that list, don’t buy it. Easy!

5. Hold yourself accountable.
Think of where in your home this item will go. Do you need it (yes)? Does it fit immaculately (yes)? Would you wear it out of the store (yes)? Is it on sale (yes/no)? Would you buy it if it wasn’t (yes)? Don’t buy it if you don’t have the right answers to these questions.

You can ask yourself these same questions if you’re shopping online. You may have to try items on at home though, instead of in a store. Remember those return windows! Happy shopping!

Making a list is the only way to shop. Keeps you accountable for spending $$ while also saving SO much time!

Making a list and questioning my purchases has helped us so much over the years. I used to get distracted and carried away when I was shopping, only to end up with things that I never really needed/loved in the first place. Going in with a set mission is crucial.

These are great tips. I usually try to make a list and stick to it. I agree with holding yourself accountable and staying on budget is really key to having a smart and successfully shopping season. Thank you!

List making over the years has saved me thousands. I have to take mine with me on the phone. It’s so easy to get sidetracked and forget that you don’t NEED something.

I always make a list of the things I want to purchase and then I also write down how much and where they are from. And I usually get all my Christmas shopping done on Black Friday.
