Tips to Survive Holiday Travel

I’ve done my fair share of travel and I always feel like the holidays are by far the worst time of year to travel. Everything that can go wrong will and it isn’t usually a pleasant experience, especially if you have kids.

Be Prepared – If you are traveling with kids bring the usual, and read this post I wrote about air travel with little ones. If you are not, bring earplugs or noise canceling headphones. I’d also suggest water and snacks. You never know when your plane might be late or you get bumped and you don’t have time between flights to grab a bite.

Bring a Smile – A smile will get you a long way while traveling and it can brighten someones day. It is so hard sometimes when your itinerary isn’t going smoothly to try to create your own sunshine, but push yourself to do it. I find in a lot of situations that my happiness is directly related to my optimism. Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes before speaking or doing.

Be Flexible – If you can, try to go with the flow. If you need to give up your seat or take a different flight, allow yourself to do so. I always like to give 1-2 days to recover between traveling and work or school commitments. It is less stressful than to worry about making it home on time or sticking to a rigid schedule.

So that’s it! I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but if you apply these to every facet of your trip it will go more smoothly and be more enjoyable during the crazy holiday travel rush.
