Simple DIY Linen Stocking

[dropcap2_large]T[/dropcap2_large]his is the year that I finally got around to adding a raw hem to all of the curtains in our house. It really helped to feel more settled since we moved in a few years ago. When I did I saved the leftover fabric so that I could make something from it. My first thought was to do some very simple raw hem linen stockings. I loved our current chunky ones but they are very oversized and heavy. Without jumping head first into holiday decor, I’m trying to get ahead on a few things so that I can enjoy time with loved ones. Today I’m sharing my easy DIY linen stocking using the leftover fabric from my curtains.

Materials

• Linen fabric (I used the leftover fabric from hemming my curtains).
• Matching thread. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but similar is nice.
• Sewing machine
• Scissors
• Measuring tape or ruler
• 12″x18″ piece of card stock or paper
• Pencil
• Iron
• Washer/Dryer

Directions

1. My fabric was already pre-washed, if yours isn’t you should pre-wash.
2. It was also pretty wrinkled, so first I ironed it to smooth out the wrinkles.
3. Fold fabric in half and trim off any seams. I used mine as the “hook” part of the stocking. If you don’t have seams, cut a 1″ strip of fabric that is about 8″ long. Fold it in half, pin if you need to, and press. Stitch with a 1/4″ allowance around all open sides.
4. Line up what will be the “top” part of your stocking and place your piece of card stock over the fabric to be sure size is right.
5. Using the pencil, draw or sketch a stocking shape on the paper, making sure that it stays in place over the fabric. My stocking stencil sleeve was about 8″ across, and about 18″ from top to heel.
6. Cut out your stocking shape and lay the stencil on top of the folded fabric, making sure to line the top up perfectly. Trace with your pencil around the shape on all sides but the top.
7. Remove the stencil and pin all around your 2 layers, leaving about 3″ unpinned at the top.
8. Single stitch both sides of the top of the stocking with a 1/4″ hem, then pin them together.
9. Fold your hook fabric in half and line it up at what will be the back of the top of your stocking (see photo) and pin into place.
10. Stitch all around your stocking sides excluding the top. I started at the front and went around to the back. Be sure to reverse stitch a few times to reinforce the seam holding the hook.
11. Turn the top of your stocking right-side-out and trim off the excess hook fabric in an angled shape.
12. Turn it back inside-out and stitch just slightly to the side of your now trimmed hook fabric. Turn the top right-side-out again to inspect that it will be covered by the side seam.
13. Turn the stocking right-side-out and wash and dry as usual.
14. Trim off any frays to your hearts desire and enjoy!
