I’ve always known of the Clift hotel in San Francisco but since I live so close to the city I rarely have the opportunity to stay the night. Last month I attended a conference in San Francisco with some friends and decided to make it the night that I’d stay at Clift. It’s just down the road from Union Square which is where some of my favorite spots are, so the location is ideal for me.
The Lobby
Inspired by the meeting of old-world hotel elegance and contemporary energy and glamour, Clift’s lobby was designed by Philippe Starck and Ian Schrager. It includes chairs from Ray and Charles Eames, a coffee table by Salvador Dalí, The Apple Stool by Roberto Sebastian Matta inspired byRené Magritte, and a sculpture custom made by William Sawaya. Don’t forget to look under the giant chair for a little surprise. The thirty-five-foot fireplace features a Bronze chimney sculpture by Gerard Garouste.
Redwood Room
Clift’s famous Redwood Room has been restored and functions as a modern San Francisco bar. The story goes that the enormous bar was carved from a single redwood tree. On a Thursday night during my visit it was packed to the brim with happy patrons.
The Suite
One of my favorite rooms in the hotel, the Suite features 725 square feet of space which includes a living room, dining room, and a separate bedroom area with bathroom. It is decorated in the same style as the rest of the hotel’s guest rooms and seems like it would be the perfect place for a stylish family getaway. One of my favorite features of the hotel is it’s minimal guest room design. The guest rooms are intended to be a place for rest and relaxation while the common areas remain full of energy and life. As an interesting side note: the gigantic slashed round mirrors near the elevators (shown above) only have the slash in them because they could not fit through the hotel doors during the remodel.
A tale of two staircases.
Something I never thought I’d love, but realized on this trip was that I love cool staircases. My very favorite place in this hotel are the staircases, one of which you can glance from the top down all 17 floors of the hotel. The way the light hits them changes throughout the day and the lavender hues appear more warm or cool in color.
My Guestroom & Experience
Each of the very spacious 372 guest rooms are outfitted with beautifully crafted furniture custom-designed by Philippe Starck. A wooden “wheelbarrow” chair inspired by Man Ray is illuminated by a custom Venetian Murano glasslamp. The rooms are airy and walls are left intentionally blank to add to the calm spa-like palette for the ultimate feeling of relaxation. Each room also features a bit of whimsy, such as the infinity mirrors placed on each end (photo above). Although the hotel features no official restaurant, room service did not let us down each time we called, not even at 10:30 at night and that’s a win in my book.
P.S. The burger was awesome!
