There’s something nostalgic about fleece. Growing up there were ads on the television (I’m old, I know!) and it was all-the-rage. Everyone had a fleece something, and it was so cool. Now that I’m an adult, fleece is one of those layers I reach for without thinking. It’s soft, warm, and easy. It works for school drop-offs, fall hikes, lazy weekends, and even those in-between days where the weather can’t quite decide what it’s doing. What I love most is how versatile it is: the right fleece can feel polished, casual, or practical depending on how you style it. Today I’ve partnered with adidas to share five simple ways to style fleece this season, all with a minimal, functional approach.
5 simple ways to style fleece this season:
- layered with neutrals for everyday simplicity
On most days, I want to feel pulled together without trying too hard. A neutral fleece (think cream, black, or soft brown) sets the tone. I pair it with straight-leg denim, a white tee, and simple sneakers for a look that feels clean and intentional.
The key here is silhouette: choose a fleece that’s slightly structured or has a clean zip front. It keeps the outfit from reading too sporty. A pair of white sneakers (my go-to for nearly everything) keeps it grounded and minimal. Add a small crossbody bag or a tote, and you look polished without being fussy. - elevated athleisure for errands or travel
Fleece really shines when you think of it as a comfortable layer rather than a full outfit. For errands, a walk around the neighborhood, or travel days, I like pairing fleece with streamlined activewear. Think leggings or joggers with a flattering fit, nothing too oversized.
A half-zip fleece is perfect here: structured enough to feel intentional, sporty enough to be practical. I usually stick with a monochrome base (black leggings + black tank) and let the fleece add texture. Finish with comfortable trainers and a backpack for a clean, functional look that still feels like you. - with tailored pieces for a minimal high-low look
This is the styling trick I reach for when I want to look a little more “dressed” without sacrificing comfort. Pair fleece with something unexpectedly structured: tailored trousers, loafers, or a long wool coat layered over the top.
A thinner fleece or fleece sweatshirt works best here, something that won’t add too much bulk under a coat. Keeping everything in the same color palette helps too (for me this would be warm greys, soft browns, or classic black). This high-low pairing feels modern and intentional, and it’s an easy way to take fleece beyond casual wear. - styled for the trail (or just the weekend)
Fleece is a classic outdoor layer for a reason. On cooler hikes or weekend outings, I like pairing a quarter-zip fleece with hiking boots, leggings or trail pants, and a lightweight pack. It’s simple, practical, and warm without being heavy.
Since fall weather in the Bay Area can shift quickly, fleece is the perfect mid-layer, you can wear it on its own, under a windbreaker, or even as a cozy top layer. Choose performance fleece that’s breathable and soft, especially for longer days outside. And if the path is more stroller-friendly than steep, it still works. - dressed up for cozy evenings at home
There’s something nice about creating a small ritual around comfort. On evenings when you want to stay in, pair an oversized fleece pullover with matching fleece, relaxed knit pants, or soft joggers. Keep the palette tonal for that cozy-but-curated feel.
This is the kind of outfit that makes movie nights or slow Sundays feel a little more intentional. Add warm socks, a cup of tea, and you’re set.
Fleece is one of the easiest pieces in a minimal closet because it adapts to almost every part of your day. With the right styling, it can feel polished, outdoorsy, or simply comfortable. It can be whatever you need it to be. Whether you’re layering it over denim, pairing it with activewear, or dressing it up with tailored pieces, fleece one of those essentials that never really goes out of season.
