Fall is in the air and as I think about it, thoughts of comfort come to mind. When I think about comfort and how it relates to my closet, I think about athleisure and how I prefer to style it so that it looks both effortless and slightly elevated. Today I’ve partnered with adidas to share my favorite tips for styling athleisure in the fall. You won’t find any fresh-from the gym looks here!
5 Tips for Styling Athleisure in the Fall
- Keep it monochrome.
Try styling your athleisure look in a monochrome color palette to keep it from looking too much like the sweats you also wear around the house. I like to choose all-white or light look because it feels less like my workout looks and is still a little unexpected when it comes to sporty-styling. If color is your thing, you could try something olive or even poppy-hued. - Limit your athletic pieces.
At most, try to stick to 1-2 pieces of athletic styles at a time. This will help you to mix-up your outfit so that it doesn’t lean too fresh-from-the-gym. It also allows you to add in more structured or elevated pieces to give your outfit a lift. Think leggings and a nice knit sweater, or if you want to wear a tracksuit consider only wearing the jacket or pants. This could also include pairing sneakers with a poplin sundress as the weather cools. - Pay attention to shoes.
Wear shoes that lean more casual with your outfit. If you try to pair athletic wear with shoes that feel too formal your look might not come together as well as if you pair them with casual shoes that are borderline athletic. White sneakers are great, or even a pair of running shoes if they are a solid color. - Add an elevated piece.
To elevate your look, pair it with a nicer jacket or coat over the top such as a leather jacket, blazer, or wool overcoat. If you don’t require a piece of outerwear, try a nice sweater or top like a cardigan or turtleneck. Or you could pair structured pants with a sweatshirt or hoodie like I did in the photos above. - Mix textures and fabrics.
If you are wearing leggings that are smooth, try pairing them with something with more texture like a knit. In the photos above I paired a teddy-textured sweatshirt with pants that have a piped detail down the front and back. A smooth poplin button down is a good choice for ribbed leggings. I’d avoid woven textures like raffia or rattan as it doesn’t feel as natural in an athleisure setting.
All in all, have fun! Remember there are no hard rules when it comes to styling and the more you experiment the more you’ll find what works best for you and your closet. If all else fails, wear what feels comfortable.
