Our first big adventure during our trip to Maui was the Road to Hāna, and beyond. I knew I wanted us to drive around the entire eastern side of Maui, if not for any other reason than to be able to say we did. At 10AM, we started our drive from Wailea a little late. The road began as a two lane semi-curved highway that turned into hair pin turns and switchbacks shortly after the small town of Paia. We stopped at Twin Falls Farm Stand to hike to Twin Falls, but the trail leading up was closed due to higher than normal water levels. We stopped at a couple of other places along the way, including the grove of Rainbow Eucalyptus trees, and a Bamboo Forest. The Bamboo forest was very muddy and didn’t seem easy to do with Søren, so we pressed on.
Once we made it to Hāna, we made the obligatory stop at Waiʻānapanapa State Park to see the blow hole and black sand beach. We also saw the Waiʻānapanapa freshwater cave. It was very beautiful and definitely did not disappoint. We had to pass on the Red Sand Beach because we didn’t have cell signal and weren’t very prepared to find it. After a quick plate at Braddah Hutts, we pressed on. The Seven Sacred pools / Bamboo Forest were pretty crowded, and not worth a stop for us, as we already spent quite a bit of time on other stops and didn’t want to drive the rest of the way in the dark.
