After leaving San Francisco our ship headed north. Destined for our first port, Ketchikan, Alaska, and all was not smooth sailing. At night I laid awake as the sea spoke softly to me, listening to the sounds of the waves and the creaking of our ship, as it ebbed and flowed with the ocean.

We took a little time in our first couple of days to relax. I got my first pedicure in an embarrassingly long amount of time, and we both got massages. It was a nice to feel pampered for just a moment and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

It was nearly 4AM when I heard Steve’s voice whisper softly, “Wake up Jess, you won’t want to miss this“. I snuck out from under a sleeping toddler and went to the balcony. He was right, Alaska welcomed us with open arms and glassy seas. I crawled back into bed was soon drifting away to dreamland. From that moment on, it was smooth sailing.

This place is magic.

We woke up early for our day in port, eating breakfast and leaving the ship shortly after arrival. Upon exiting our ship we were greeted with a soft drizzle. Prior to our trip I booked a boat tour of the Misty Fjords National Monument, so onto a much smaller boat we went. The tour was lengthly, at one point crossing over to British Colombia, Canada. Our tour guide left no fjord unturned, slowing at just the right moments. The mountains towered over our tiny boat as we stared up the sheer cliff face. Feeling intimidated by their size and in awe of their beauty. Wildlife ranged from Bald Eagle nests to baby harbor seals, safely resting near the waters edge until their mama returns. Upon our return to the harbor in Ketchikan, two bald eagles soared above us, awaiting scraps from the Salmon fisherman. It was raining now.

We didn’t get to explore more of Ketchikan, as we had a very short time in port. It left me feeling a little unsettled, as we didn’t get to explore as much as we would have liked.

  1. Wow beautiful photography as always! I dream of heading to Alaska and this cruise looks amazing! Is it not too bad for sea-sickness?

    1. Thanks! I think it depends on the time of year and the weather. I didn’t have any sickness issues but my older son did. I purchased some dramamine for him and it cleared it right up. The only time the water was rough was when we were on our way to and from Alaska. When we were in the bay around Alaska it was very smooth water.

  2. I am blown away, this place looks absolutely breathtaking! I look forward to following more of your family’s adventures!
