Hiking Through California

[dropcap2_large]S[/dropcap2_large]ince I’ve lived my entire life in California, the outdoors have always been a big part of my life. In my childhood I spent hours playing outside and as I grew older I turned to other outdoor activities like running, camping, and trips to the lake. As an adult some of my favorite trips involve the great outdoors and although other places are beautiful, there’s no place that has my heart as much as my own backyard. Today I’ve partnered with Athleta to share some of my favorite places to hike in California as well as a look at their new sustainable line.

Redondo Beach in Half Moon Bay, California.

I’ve always been respectful of mother nature, but as an adult I’ve become increasingly aware of my effect on the planet and strive to make choices that reflect that respect. I’m so excited to share that Athleta has recently become a Certified B Corporation. This means that their core values reflect their wishes to put people and planet on the same level as profits. Right now Athleta employs 2,503 women, makes 46% of their fabrics from sustainable fibers, 1% of their products are made using water saving techniques, and 70% of the waste from store packaging has been diverted from the landfill. By 2020, their goals are to employ 10,000 women, to make 80% of their fabrics from sustainable fibers, to make 25% of their products using water-saving techniques, and to divert 80% of their store packaging waste from landfills. This kind of aggressive goal-setting to make our world a better place is one I am proud to help support.

From the beach, to the redwoods, to the many people who call The Golden State home, California is very diverse. With 20 different climate zones, the state offers a wide-variety of outdoor options for hiking. With weather that can be freezing cold in the morning, yet warm and pleasant after the fog lifts you’ll need clothing that performs well at every temperature. Luckily, Athleta has a wide selection of sustainable performance fabrics.

Recently I spent some time testing products from Athleta’s new sustainable line, running along the coast, hiking in golden hills of the central coast, and exploring in the redwoods. I tested out the following:

Cloudburst Jacket
A lightweight and water-repellent jacket made from recycle polyester. I chose this jacket in the dove grey color. Since most of my wardrobe is black, it makes for a nice contrast. I’ve been wearing it in a size small and I’d say it’s true to size. I love the thumb cutout detail on the sleeves and adjustable waistline.

Limitless Top
A lightweight slightly fitted sweat-wicking top perfect for medium and high impact workouts.  Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory. I chose this in the color black, in a size small, but could have probably gone with an extra-small for a closer fit. I love that the sleeves have thumbholes to help keep them in place, perfect for my cold-weather runs.

Coaster Luxe Sweatshirt
A super soft oversized sweatshirt perfect for everyday wear. The fabric it’s made out of is comes from European beechwood trees in sustainable forestry plantations. I chose mine in black, size small. I could have probably gone one size smaller and still had a relaxed fit. It looked great with the pants I tried out below and a french-tucked into a pair of jeans.

Headlands Hybrid Cargo Tight
These leggings are amazing, they have six pockets! Six! They are also made from recycled nylon, comfortable for any activity, and water-resistant. I ran and hiked along the beautiful California coast in them. I chose them in black (of course), and a size 2. The fit is perfect.

Wander Stash Skinny Pant
Made from recycled nylon, these smooth and cozy pants are made to do just about anything in. I wore mine for a hike and around town, but they’d also be perfect for travel because they fold so flat and are very versatile in styling. I chose them in black, size 2. They fit perfect for me everywhere but the waist.

Where are your favorite places to hike? Have you tried any of the new sustainable line from Athleta?
