Often I get e-mail from readers requesting to do a packing list for a specific place. Sometimes it is for some obscure trip that I feel might not appeal to everyone, but sometimes it is not. This packing list request came from a reader who is spending 10-14 days in the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria) and attending a wedding while there. She’s not visiting until December, but the weather in the Canary islands doesn’t fluctuate too much throughout now and then. The high now is around 80F, and in December it will be around 70F. It will be wetter in December, and possibly windier.

The islands are varied in shape, ranging from lava rock to white and black sand beaches and the African sun can be hot. My favorite item from this list has to be the fringed tote, it’s such a statement piece. I’ve included a long black maxi dress that can easily be dressed up with some jewelry and a simple pair of sandals for the wedding, as well as plenty of beach-friendly go-to items. The closed toe shoes will work for walking on lava paths and doing light exploring, but I’d also consider a pair of sneakers depending on your itinerary. Obviously this is a little more of a casual resort-style packing list, and if you’re planning to have a more active trip you might need to change out a few items.

    1. These are stock since I’ve never actually had the chance to take my own. 😉 I think the one that looks more above is taken from a hotel, as many taller ones surround that beach.

The African sun (especially in Gran Canaria) is SUPER hot! Like instant sunburn status. Tell her to pack her own sunscreen, because resort sunscreen is overpriced! If she’s traveling from the US she should just pack a bottle in her checked bag because sunscreen is more expensive in Europe anyways. 🙂

    1. i am travelling from canada and will definitely pack sunscreen! thank you for the tip lindsey!

As we now only take carry on luggage this has been invaluable! Go to Gran Canaria every year and never tire of it. Great Island, friendly people, tasty food and all year round sunshine- what else do you want?!

We are traveling to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria from Canada for 3 weeks in March. This is a return trip for us because we loved the island so much. Our experience last March was the temperature stayed in the low 70’s, very little rain and beautiful sunshine. Bring casual clothes, sturdy shoes for hiking and sight seeing and a warm jacket for evening strolls. We speak no Spanish and found that few people on the island spoke English although they were so kind and friendly and tried very hard to help us with directions. Bus travel is very easy, no need for a rental car. You can visit the different islands by ferry for an interesting day trip. Can’t wait to go back!

    1. Always love to visit those types of places. Have fun on your next trip! 🙂
