As someone who works out every single day of the week, I am really happy with this portion of my wardrobe. It is a bit more robust than others, mostly out of necessity. My most favorite activities are running, hiking, walking, barre ballet workouts, yoga, biking, spin class, skiing, and strength training; all of which require different clothing. Today I’m going to share with you my favorite workout clothing from my minimal closet.
For Running, Walking, Biking, & Training
I run a 2-3 times per week and am very specific about what I like in the clothing I wear for it, as I think most runners are. My tops need to be supportive but not restrictive or cause chaffing. One thing we probably all have in common is that we need a practical place for our phone. I prefer to have mine in a rear pocket instead of a side one because it does not throw off your form as much, nor does it pull your bottoms down. Shoes are a bit more specific and I have tried out a ton of different shoes, but I love ones these the best.

For Hiking & Other Outdoor Activties
The great outdoors are my favorite, but it doesn’t always have to be the rocky mountains to count as an outdoor activity. I love being anywhere there is more greenery and sometimes it’s just our foothills. I love my trail running shoes for hiking, though if you have weaker ankles you’ll likely want something stronger for more stability.
For Barre & Yoga
I do barre and yoga a few times a week, usually mixing up which I do based on how I am feeling physically. I love clothing that is stretchy and stays put but doesn’t necessarily need features like pockets.
For Skiing, etc.
Winter’s gift, snow sports! I love both downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, as well as snowshoeing. They all have one thing in common though, you need to stay warm and if you’re in California dress in layers because we have many bluebird days. I’ve got a great packing list here if you’re headed on a trip, otherwise a bunch of my favorites are below.
How many items do I need?
I’m going to lead with that my workout collection is extensive because I am active every single day. If you are only active 2-3x a week you could very easily get away with much less. If you workout 2-3 times per week I would recommend a pair or two of leggings, shorts, tops and sports bras, plus whatever other items you need, like a pair of running shoes for running.
A final note on making your items last longer, be gentle! I wash my clothing in the washing machine with cold water only and always hang dry.
