In any given wardrobe there will always be the tried and true items. These items will transcend seasons, trends, and even time. Today I’m sharing with you some of my minimal closet signature staples. I will always have one of these in my minimal closet no matter the year or style, they simply just work.
1. White Button Down Shirt
Dressed up or pared-down the white button down shirt is absolutely timeless. I love to layer mine under a sweater or wear it with denim in its most simple form.
2. Striped Long-Sleeve T-Shirt
This tee has been in my closet for over 5 years now and every year I reach for it again. The silhouette is classic and pairs well with anything from denim and sneakers to being tucked into slacks with a blazer.
3. Neutral Cashmere Sweater
Year-round I find myself reaching for the perfect lightweight cashmere sweater to complete certain outfits. Even in summer! Being near the coast we have cooler evenings in the summer so it makes the perfect layer to stay comfortable. It’s great paired with everything, I don’t think you can go wrong.
4. Black Slip Dress
For over 5 years this has been my go everywhere and do everything dress. Since it is black it is very easy to dress up or down. When dressed up I wear a nice coat with heels, dressed down with sandals or sneakers, or I even wear it with a sweater over so the dress functions more like a skirt.
5. Well-Fitting Denim
Unfortunately there is no one-size-fits-all recipe for well fitting denim. What might be great on me might look different on someone else. The best way to find this is to figure out which of your pants you feel great in and what their attributes are. For me it means having a high rise, button fly, and a length between ankle and regular.
6. White Sneakers
One of the most requested recommendations I get for Minimal Closet items is a pair of basic white sneakers. These are another tried and true staple in my wardrobe, they just make sense.
7. Wool Coat
A timeless piece for your wardrobe that can be a bit of an investment, my wool coat has seen many winters and still looks brand new. Since it’s made from wool it also keeps me nice and toasty and looks equally good with both sneakers and high heels.
8. Black Blazer
Not just for the office, I reach for my blazer to wear with plenty of casual outfits as well. It works great as a light jacket with pants, jeans, or even dresses.
9. Winter Boots
I use the term winter here, but realize that winter weather and requirements will vary everywhere. Everyone should have a pair of boots that keep your feet warm and dry. I have a pair of Ilse Jacobsen rain boots that have gotten me through snow and rain and everything in between with warm enough socks.
10. One-Piece Swimsuit
Not only is a well-cut one-piece swimsuit flattering, it can also be worn as a bodysuit with some outfits. I’ve had some of my swimsuits for years and years and feel as though they’ll never go out of style.
