Stress Free Travel

travel-tips-safe-home

We travel often enough that there is always a small amount of worry on our minds regarding the safety of our home while we’re away. We have insurance, but that only goes so far. A few of my favorite tips for keeping your home safe while you’re away are:

Rely on others. Often we have a friend stop by to check in on the place and swoop up any mail or packages that may have been delivered. We usually notify our neighbors as well to keep their eyes open for anything suspicious. It’s an instant calm-down when you speak to them or receive an update about your little abode.

Home automation. We have an automatic timer on some of our lights that plug in. It turns on when it gets dark and stays on for a specified number of hours. You can automate a few lamps in your home to stay on for different amounts of time to make your home look less like an empty nest. Our favorite is this one. There is also this one which allows you to program more settings on a weekly basis.

Use a security system. This is sort-of a no-brainer but will definitely give you peace of mind. Most home security system providers can alert authorities if there is a problem, and some even include a security camera so that you can check in on your home while away. If you want to be able to check in, but don’t want a monthly security company commitment you can do your own standalone security camera.

Do you have any favorite tips for keeping your mind at ease while you are away?

  1. Relying on others is a good one, especially if you have pets or plants! I just try to enjoy the adventure of traveling and focus on what I’m doing at the time rather than worrying about what’s going on at home. :]

    1. HA! I wasn’t even thinking about my plant babies. Our friend takes care of the potted ones for us and we keep our in-ground ones on a drip. This might spawn another post, lol.

  2. Great tips – yes, having the home in order definitely makes it less stressful when traveling!

    1. Thanks! It sure does. I’d hate to carry excess stress while traveling, it’s already stressful enough!

  3. I am so worried about leaving our house for two months in summer. I’m thinking getting people to come and check will be the best thing. Thanks for these tips!
