In my experience as a portrait photographer, one of my clients biggest worries was always what to wear for family photos. I’ve shared some tips for what to wear for family photos before, but today I’m taking a different approach and sharing five different family photo outfit ideas. I know that some people are more visual, so I hope my moodboard approach will help.
Fall Color Inspired Outfits
This color theme would look great in a grassy field or in a greener area, dappled with fall leaves if you’re lucky. I’d avoid heavy forest as it might blend too much into the background.

Traditional Denim & Gray Photo Outfits
Like the jeans and white tee cliché, but elevated. This color theme would work great anywhere, especially a more playful location.

Crimson & Black Holiday Outfits
These colors will pop in most settings and the jewel tone always reminds me of the holidays.

Nature-inspired Family Photo Outfits
Some of my favorite earthy tones flatter everyone, but sadly don’t play well with a green grassy photo location. I’d love to see them in a dry field or along the shore but wouldn’t limit them to just there.

Monochrome Fun & Formal Photo Outfit
I love how these monochrome family photo outfits feel elevated and modern, but not stuffy. I promise everyone will thank you for not shoving them into heels and ties.

Please note that while I tried to break clothing down into gendered categories, feel free to pull from any. Little girls don’t always have to wear dresses and neither do women. I feel more comfortable during photos in pants, and so do many little girls that I’ve met. Comfort is one of the most important aspects of dressing for photos, because if someone isn’t comfortable they can’t be themselves.
